An Update from the Superintendent

Kathy Mollenkopf
I can hardly believe that it is the middle of November already!  The 2018-2019 school year is moving along quickly.

On behalf of the Board of Education and with personal heartfelt gratitude, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you - our community - for your support in renewing on a continuing basis the 1% income tax levy.  During this time of uncertainty regarding state funding, the revenue generated from the income tax levy is critical to the financial health of our district. Crestview Local Schools is a wonderful school district, and your commitment to continue to support it financially has a clear, defining impact upon our students.  So, thank you!

Our middle school and high school students completed their first nine weeks at the end of October, and our elementary students are just completing their first trimester.  Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held November 19 and 20.  I want to encourage you to participate in the conferences.  Educationally, one of the strongest indicators of students’ academic success is parental involvement in a child’s education; I encourage you to invest in this opportunity to talk with your student(s)’ teachers.

On November 12, both our elementary and middle school/high schools hosted Veteran’s Day Programs to honor veterans in our community.  Both assemblies boasted outstanding attendance connecting our students and staff to our community through those who have served our country.  I would like to thank our building administrators and those teachers who gave additional time to organize and prepare students for the assemblies.  These extra efforts were a blessing to our veterans!  If you are interested in viewing either of the Veteran’s Day Programs, both were captured on video and have been linked to our website.

As many of you may be aware, the owners of Vancrest of Convoy have made the decision to close this nursing home facility and as a result, they also made the decision to approach the Board of Education offering the facility building and grounds as a gift to the school district.  The Board has accepted the gift and is now in the process of discerning the best use for the facility and grounds.

Additionally, the Board of Education is finalizing plans for the addition of seven middle school/high school classrooms with minor renovations to several other instructional spaces on the K-12 building.  Meeting the educational needs of the students in our district is a primary focus of the Board; the additional classrooms will provide more instructional space for both students and teachers.

I would be remiss in this update if I did not applaud the efforts of our fall athletes, academic team and fine arts students.  Mrs. Hancock, cast and crew did an exceptional job with the fall musical Into the Woods.  Our marching Knights have appeared at every football game, and even though small in number, they sound great!  I am proud of their continued efforts.  The Scholastic Team participated in its first meet and earned runner-up honors.  Athletically, golf, girls’ soccer, volleyball, and cross country have all finished their seasons with the girls’ cross country team earning an opportunity to run at National Trail for the state cross country meet.  Energy and enthusiasm are running high as our football team continues down the playoff trail.  It is a GREAT time to be a KNIGHT!

I am proud of Crestview Local Schools and the dedication of our teachers and staff to creating a safe environment for education as well as learning opportunities that afford a positive, productive education for students.  On behalf of the Board of Education, the administrators, teachers, and staff, I invite you to engage in opportunities to support the educational and extra-curricular endeavors of our students.  At any time if you have questions or comments, I am happy to talk with you.
