CK Magic in the Arena of Athletics
by Dave Bowen
Crestview Athletic Administrator/Middle School Principal

The 2010-11 school year once again saw many successes for Crestview student-athletes.  Crestview was represented at the pinnacle of OHSAA athletics at the state level with cross country at Scioto Downs, the site of the state cross country meet; the softball team finishing as state runner-up; and the girls’ track 4 x 400 meter relay team finishing third in Columbus.

In the fall, our soccer team took a step forward with the girls winning their first-ever tournament match in a very competitive sectional.  Our volleyball team won the NWC league and sectional title.  The boys’ cross country team finished as NWC Runner-Up and qualified for the regional tournament at Troy as a team.  Garret Gleckler finished his outstanding cross country career representing CHS as an individual at state.

In hoops, the girls’ basketball team garnered an NWC runner-up trophy.  The boys’ team also finished as NWC runner-up with a 16-5 record, the program’s best since 06-07.

The spring season is always very busy and exciting for Crestview student-athletes.  The baseball team brought home another sectional title.  Our tracksters finished strong in the conference meet (boys and girls both finished 4th) and sent 16 student-athletes to compete at the regional level with the girls’ 4 x 400 meter relay team consisting of Erika Frey, Ami Callow, Courtney Perrott, and Layne Callow finishing third at Jesse Owens Stadium in the state meet.  And, our softball team continued its dominance by winning the NWC and advancing to the state tournament for the ninth time in the last twelve years, bringing home a state runner-up trophy.

While it is challenging to maintain such a level of excellence in our athletic program, that is our goal.  We have an outstanding coaching staff to lead our young people into the 2011-12 school year.  New varsity football coach and Crestview alumnus Jared Owens has joined our staff for 11-12.  Owens was a 3-sport athlete at CHS who continued his athletic career at Bluffton University.  He has spent the last three years as a varsity assistant coach at South Adams, serving as offensive coordinator in 2010.

What is in store for 2011-12?  That remains to be seen; however, Crestview student-athletes will continue to demonstrate pride in their community by showing great sportsmanship, competing with intensity, and being gracious in both victory and defeat.  Educational athletics are just that, educational, and your young people will continue to learn in the arena of competition, using their experiences as a springboard for the game of life.  Go Knights!
